  1. Who is eligible to NETFILE using eTaxCanada™ 2011 free of charge?

Before May 1st, 2012, it is free to use eTaxCanada™ 2011 for NETFILE and/or print computer-based paper returns if you were a student at any time during 2011 (line 320 on your Federal Schedule 11 is claimed), OR if your net income at line 236 of your 2011 T1 return is less than $25,000.

All versions of eTaxCanada 2011 have the same price. If you are not eligible for our free offerings, eTaxCanada 2011 provides several types of license for you to choose:

  1. What is the difference between Windows version, Mac version and Cloud/Online Version?

All versions of eTaxCanada 2011 provide the same user experience. The only difference is the platform you are running it, you may run it as:

- running a local installed copy on Windows,
- running a local installed copy on Mac OS,
- or running it in a web browser at https://www.etaxcanada.com/cloud/.

All versions can connect to the eTaxCanada's secure cloud storage so that you can continue your tax preparation anywhere, anytime. Creating an account is FREE!

Previous years' eTaxCanada Online users, please create your accunt at https://www.etaxcanada.com/cloud/ again, you may create it account using the same email address and password you use at http://www.etaxcanada.com/online

  1. I downloaded the pre-certified version. How do I update it to NETFILE?

If you are using the pre-certified (BETA) version to prepare your tax return, you will need to unintsall the BETA version from your computer and install the certified version.

  • Uninstall Phanku eTaxCanada from your computer.
  • Install Microsoft Silverlight 5 from http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/.
  • Get the latest version of eTaxCanada from https://www.etaxcanada.com/cloud/. After the web page is loaded, right click your mouse anywhere on the web page, select [Install Phanku eTaxCanada onto this computer...]. Or you can click on the "Install Locally" button on the top-right corner to install it. If you wish to go through the installation wizard, please click on the "Clear Configuration" button in the Settings tab to follow the wizard to install it.

  1. How do I reset my password?

If you forgot your Cloud account password, please email to support@etaxcanada.com from the same email address of your Cloud account, and put "Reset password" in the email subject. Your password will be reset, and the new password will be emailed to you soon.

  1. Why I cannot download the .tax file?

If you see the following message when trying to download the dot tax file
"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot found. Please try again later." Then, please do the following steps:

  • Click the Tools menu of Internet Explorer
  • Select Internet Options
  • Open the Internet Options dialog box, select the Advanced tab
  • Under the Security section of the settings(at the bottom of the Settings), remove the check for "Do not save encrypted pages to disk"
  • Re-start Internet Explorer
  • Download the .tax file again
  1. Why I cannot receive my password?

Please make sure your email is a state that can receive email. If your email address cannot receive email from us, you should update your email address.

To update your email address, you need to provide us the following information: Your Name, Date of Birth, Address and postal code. Also please provide your original Email and an new valid Email address. After we validate the information, we will update your email address notify you to get your password using your new email address.

  1. How do I install eTaxCanada 2011 to my Windows or Mac?

Installing eTaxCanada 2011 is simple. Just visit https://www.etaxcanada.com/cloud/, wait for the page to load, then when it prompt you to login, push [Work offline] button. On Windows, the first time, it will prompt you to install the application to your Windows. If you skip that step in Windows, or you are on Mac OS, on the cloud page, the top-right corner, you should see a button [Install Locally], push that button will download and install eTaxCanada 2011 to your Windows or Mac. If you are using Windows, the installation will create a shortcut icon [Phanku eTaxCanada] on your desktop, next time you may launch the application by double click the icon. If you are using Mac OS, then the application will be downloaded to your default download folder, usually "Downloads", you may go to that folder, double click it, then it will launch on Mac locally. We suggest you move the downloaded eTaxCanada 2011 to other folder on your Mac, but it is not a must.

In some rare case, it doesn't prompt you to install locally, or you do not find the [Install Locally] button, please follow the follow steps: go to https://www.etaxcanada.com/cloud/, after the page is loaded, right click your mouse on the web page, you will see a pop up menu [Silverlight] and [Install Phanku eTaxCanada onto this computer...], please select [Install Phanku eTaxCanada onto this computer...], then it will download and install. (A friendly tip, if you are using a Apple single button mouse, click your mouse while holder Ctrl key will do a right click.)

If you already have eTaxCanada installed on your machine, when you right click your mouse again on https://www.etaxcanada.com/cloud/ page, the pop up menu will show [Remove this application...] instead of [Install Phanku eTaxCanada onto this computer...]. This can be used to force a re-installation to get latest version of the software, in case the auto update doesn't work due to system setup.

You may need to install Microsoft Silverlight 5 before you install/use eTaxCanadaT 2011. You can click here to get it from Microsoft.com.

  1. How do I begin?

First of all, you will need to create a new profile/return and save it. Just click on the "New Profile" button at the bottom in the "Documents" tab, it will prompt you to choose if you want to use Interview or directly work with forms. Interview is recommended for users who is not familar with forms. Then a new profile will be created. You can choose to save your profile in your computer (choose Local) or save your profile in the secured eTaxCanada Cloud server (choose Cloud). Saving your profile in Cloud server requires an eTaxCanada Cloud account. It's FREE to create accounts on eTaxCanada Cloud.

eTaxCanada Online (for tax year of 2010 and before) users, please create a new Cloud accunt for your 2011 tax year, you may use your same email address and password to register your new account.

The Interview will guide you through filling out your forms. If you did not choose the option when you create your profile, you may use the interview any time by go to the "Shortcut" tab when you are viewing your profile. If you do not see the tab, please push the button [Show Utilities] on the bottom right. After you open the "Shortcut" tab, in the Filter, type in "interview".

The following following two places are useful to navigate through amount in your return, available forms or forms that you have filled out.

Your Workspace:
This unique “Workspace” is your powerful one-stop console for personal tax preparation, enabling quick access to all forms. From this page you can see what forms and slips you've used for your return so far (links to the slips/forms shown in different color), as well as a summary of your return information.

You may get to your Workspace by go to your "Family Information" page, the link of Workspace is at the bottom. Or, you may type in "Workspace" in the Shortcut filter.

Your T1 form:
Recommended for users who are familiar with the T1 form. Our virtual form is in vivid colour and crystal sharp, making it easy to navigate through your taxes. For example, if you know that you have an amount to report at line 126 (rental income), you can go directly to line 126 in your T1, and click on the green number. You will then be automatically directed to the T1 Worksheet, which shows you exactly how line 126 is calculated. From there eTaxCanada will continue to direct you to other forms as they are necessary, always keeping you informed about how new numbers are generated.

You may get to your T1 form from your Workspace, or you may type in "T1" in the Shortcut filter.

  1. How do I fill out the tax forms?

You can open our tax forms from a few places, such as “Interview”, “Workspace” and “T1 form” pages. However, the Workspace is the hub of all slips and forms.

On the forms you will notice both green and blue numbers. The green numbers are those you fill in yourself, but in another place; the blue numbers are calculated by the software. Clicking on any of the green numbers will take you immediately to the source of that number. For example, on the T1 Income Tax and Benefit Return, clicking on the amount for line 101, Employment Income, will take you to the T1 Worksheet, where you are able to see the calculation of your total employment income.

Some forms will require you to add slips – for example, to enter amount on line 101 on T1 you must add your T4 slip. To add a slip, simply fill in the information from your own copy onto the software’s copy.

The Shortcut tab is also very useful to locate a form or slip. The "Shortcut" tab is located at the bottom of the software while your are viewing your profile.

If you do not see the "Shortcut" tab, please push the button "Show Utilities" on buttom-right.

  1. How do I add a slip?

You can add a new slip (T4 Slips and Other Slips) by clicking the "Add" button under the slip/form window.

  1. The T4 comes up blank without any fields to fill in. How do I add a T4 slip?

You need to "add" a new T4 slip by clicking the "Add" button under the slip/form window.

  1. Can a coupled return be done using eTaxCanada™ 2011?

Yes. eTaxCanada™ 2011 does support coupled returns. Enter both your own and your partner's information on the "Family Information" page, enter your dependant information in Schedule 5 when applicable; enter any T slips in both individual’s Workspace, and other applicable forms, e.g. self-employment forms, then go to the Family Workspace to review and split family based incomes, credits and tax reductions. You will find shortcuts at the bottom of the window, there handy shortcuts will help you navigate between Workspaces and forms easily.

Note: if you and your partner resided in different provinces during the tax year, you cannot complete your return together.
  1. I cannot find a form to add my medical expenses. What are my options?

You can click on the green number at line 330 and/or 331 on Schedule 1. If you click on the link for line 330, it will lead you to the T1 Worksheet to fill out the medical expenses related to 330. If you click on the link for line 331, it will lead you to Schedule 5, the Details of Dependent form, where you can fill out the medical expenses for your dependents.

  1. How do I save my return?

To save your return, click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the software. A pop-up window will let you select the location (Local or Cloud) and file name for your return.

  1. How can I create a second return for my spouse/common law partner?

To create a second return for your spouse, we suggest you to check the box of "Build your return and your spouse or comman law partner's return together" in your "Family Information" page (In the Joint Return section). That way, the spouse's net income, spousal amounts will be calculated and filled in where applicable by the software.

If you prefer to create two profiles, you can go to the Documents tab located on the top left. Push "New Profile" to create the 2nd return.

eTaxCanada 2011 support open multiple returns/profiles at the same time in the Opened Documents tab, there are small tabs with the Documents names at the bottom.

  1. I cannot find 319 for interest paid on Student loans.  Can you direct me to where I can find this information?

Field 319 (interest paid on Student loans) can be found at the federal Schedule 1.

  1. How do I create another return in eTaxCanada 2011?

You can create as many profile as you want in eTaxCanada 2011, even in the Cloud version. The Documents tab is designed to help you efficiently manage your tax profiles/returns. Push the New Profile will create a new profile/return. For each profile, you have the option to save it in your local computer or save it on the secured eTaxCanada Cloud server.

Please note that eTaxCanada compile to the 20-return limits.

  1. How do I create my spouse's return?

eTaxCanada 2011 supports joint returns for you and your spouse or common-law partner, provided you lived in the same providence during the tax year. To file a joint return, simply check the box under "Joint return" on the "Family Information" page.

  1. I am using a shared computer. How do I protect my return file?

In this case, it's recommended to save your tax profile on our secure Cloud Server. Your account will be securely protected on server. You will be able to save your profile from our Cloud Server to your private computer anytime, anywhere. Creating an account on eTaxCanada is Free.

  1. Why I cannot put in the banking info for direct deposit form (T1-DD)?

We disable most of the entry boxes in form T1-DD (direct deposit form) except for the phone number. If you change your name, your address, or direct deposit information, you are NOT eligible to NETFILE; you have to change them before you NETFILE. It is listed in the NETFILE Wizard, if you check the box to indicate your have those changes, it will not build the ".tax" file for you.

You may find the instruction about direct deposit in the Family Information page. It is under the note #2.

You should update your Direct Deposit information before you submit your NETFILE tax return.

  1. How do I report TL2?

Go to your Workspace, find the link “TL2-Claim for Meals and Lodging Expenses” to open the form, and then enter your information into the form.

  1. There are some To-do items stop me from NETFILE, them are not applicable to me, what should I do?

If the items are not applicable, please look for a check box with "Not Applicable" in the target area when you click the To-do item. Check those boxes then the To-do’s will go away.

If you still have some that you cannot clear, please type the content of the To-do into the email and send it to us, so we can provide more specific hints.

  1. My husband is a non-resident, so he doesn’t have a SIN number, the software keep ask for a valid SIN number, and I cannot NETFILE my return. What to do?

To leave your husband's SIN as blank, you should not use Joint Return option. Since the option is for couples who both file returns. In your case, please uncheck the box in the Joint Return section on the Family Information page. After then, you should find a link read "Spouse Information Worksheet" under the Instruction section in the lower part of Family Information page. You may enter your spouse's date of birth etc info. Also, you need to chose "Yes" for the line 5527 on your NETFILE page.

  1. My saved profiles disappear from the Document tab, why?

If you do not see the profiles you saved on the secured Cloud server. Please make sure you are logged in to your Cloud account.

If you do not see the locally saved profiles, please open the Settings tab, and make sure you select "Private computer" in the "Setting of computer zone" section.

  1. How do I enter my dependent's information?

Go to your Schedule 5 – Details of Dependant page (Tips: you can either go to the form from your Workspace, or by using the shortcuts locate at the bottom of the application). Push the "Add" button on the Navigation Toolbar to add a dependant, In the schedule 5 page, you will find you can split the claims for various credits or allowances.

All dependant related expenses are entered in this form, for example, child care expense, tuition amount transfer, adoption expense, medical expense and more.

  1. How do I claim an eligible dependant (equivalent to a spouse)?

In the Schedule 5 for that dependant, check both boxes of “Live with tax payer” and “Eligible dependant”. You can only claim an eligible amount if your marital status is not married or living common-law at the end of the year, or if you are married or living common-law at the end of the year but you indicate that you have changed your marital status during the year on the Family Information page.

  1. How do I transfer a dependant's disability amount?

In Schedule 5 for that dependant, check two boxes, “Infirm” and “Disabled”. You can also enter disability supports expenses and other related expense in the Medical Expense section.

  1. How do I claim child care expenses?

Please enter child care expense amounts the child’s Schedule 5 page, and then T778 will be take the amount and do the calculation.

  1. How do I report UCCB?

Go the Family Workspace, under the Worksheet – Universal Child Care Benefit, click on any green numbers, and it will direct you to the RC62 page where you can add your Slip. After entering the slip, go back to the Family Workspace (tips: can be done by right click your mouse in Windows version), and indicate who will claim it by selecting the appropriate radio button.

  1. How do I claim medical expenses?

Go to Schedule 1, locate line 330 and 331, then click on the green numbers beside the line numbers, it will lead you to the area where you will be enter your amounts.

(Tip: while you are on Schedule 1, in the Find box on the toolbar, type in "medical" and then hit the telescope icon, will help you find the line 330 and 331, in Windows version only)

  1. How do I claim a disability amount for myself?

From your Workspace, enter for T929 (Tip: enter T929 then push the Find button with the telescope icon on the toolbar, in the Windows version). After you are there, select “Yes” in the first download list box, to confirm that you are disabled.

  1. Can your software be used to split pension income?

eTaxCanada 2011 do support form T1032 to split pension income. And doing that is fairly easy. After you fill out your T4A, T4RSP etc slips, the pension income amount will be added up and shown on Family Worksheet, where you can indicate how you want to split them. After you enter the information, you can go to your Workspace page (handy shortcut is provided at the bottom of the application), then find the link for form T1032 and open it.

  1. Why line 208 is zero even I enter my RRSP contribution information onto Schedule 7?

Please click the green number on line1 of Schedule 7, it will open the RRSP Worksheet, please ensure that the line 1 (deduction limit for 2011) is entered according to your 2010 Notices of Assessment or Reassessment. That is because if the deduction limit is not entered, the software will assume it is 0.00, and the line 208 cannot be greater than the deduction limit.

  1. How do I report my self-employment income?

The slips that allow you to report self-employment income can be found from the Workspace page under "Self-Employment Related." To report Professional Income, click on "T2125 & T1139 - Statement of Professional Activities." Once the blank page has appeared, click the "Add" button (found on the navigation tool bar).

Begin by entering all your business information, including business name, address, etc. Clicking on any green number will then take you automatically to the T2125 form, where you can begin reporting your income and expenses. Advertising expenses are entered at line 8521, office expenses at line 8810, etc. If you have any Motor Vehicle Expenses, find line 9281 and click on the green number beside it. Then click the "Add" button to open a worksheet that will calculate your vehicle expenses. If you have more than one vehicle to report, you will need to add additional Motor Vehicle Expenses slips. Back on the T2125 form you will find the amount beside line 9281 automatically updated. To return to the T2125 form at any time, click on "[Your Name] T2125 - Statement of Professional Activities," found beneath the navigation tool bar.

Capital cost allowance is entered at line 9936. To locate a line at any time, enter the number in the Navigation Tool Bar and click "Search." You will be directed to the correct line. In the current version, you must calculate the CCA yourself and enter it at line 9936. Your Net Professional Income will be calculated by the software, and will appear on your T2125 at line 9946. If you have multiple T2125 forms to report, the S2125 will add together your professional income. The appropriate lines on your T1 form will be automatically completed by the software.

  1. Why is the T4 tab/page blank? How do I enter my T4 slip?

When you first click on the T4 slip the page may appear blank. To create a new T4 slip, click on the "Add" button in the Navigation Tool Bar, then fill in the information on the form.

  1. How do I enter my T4A and other T slips?

To enter slips, start from your Workspace page. All slip types are listed in the left-hand column. Click on the type of slip you need, then click the "Add" in the Navigation Tool Bar.

  1. How do I elect to pay additional CPP/QPP on the under deducted amount?

Go to Schedule 8, enter your amount on to line 2 where applicable, and then check the box at the bottom of the page to indicate your election.

  1. How do I claim public transit passes?

If there is public transit passes amount on your T4, you can just input them into the boxes in the "Other information" area.

If you have other transit passes amount, see the "Line 364" in the Schedule 1. (Tips: when you have Schedule 1 open, you can type in 364 in the find input box on the toolbar, then push the Find button with a telescope icon, then you don't need to scan the form line by line)

  1. What should I do if I have two T4E slips?

If you have received more than one T4E slips, please merge the amounts on each boxes, and then enter the merged amounts into the T4E slip in the software. The following is a sample of how to merge two T4E slips with different repayment rate on box 7:

  1. Why I cannot find the box 42 on the T3 slip in your software?

The amount in Box 42 represents a distribution or return of capital from the trust. It affects the value of the cost base of the mutual fund. Box 42 is for information purposes only and as such, the amount should not be entered on the T3 slip in the software.

Note however that this amount represents a change in the capital balance for the mutual fund trust identified on the slip. Please refer to CRA publication RC4169 titled Tax Treatment of Mutual Funds for Individuals for information on how to recalculate the ACB (adjusted cost base) in such a situation. You may need to enter your calculation result into Schedule 3 (Capital Gains or Losses).

  1. Why I cannot enter Box 13 on T5 slip?

Please look for the "* Interest from Canadian source (box 13 above)" lower on T5 slip, it the 2nd last box with light blue border. There please input your interest from different source, so the total will be added up on box 13 . That is because different processing logic will need to apply to different type of interest income.

  1. How to enter line 6804 in Step 5 of form T1032?

The line 6804 should be entered on the Family Workspace, the 4th line in the Joint Election to Split Pension Income section. Please note that if the pension is from a foreign country, and you have foreign tax deducted, please do not enter the foreign deducted amount for line 6804. Line 6804 is for Canadian source only.

  1. My spouse and I have a joint-account, and we receive a T5 slip, how should we split the interest income in our returns?

You need to select Joint-Account in box 23 of the T5 slip. Then on the Percentage box above box 23 , enter the percentage, e.g. enter 50 for 50%. If you receive interest income in USD from a Canadian source, then you need to convert it to CAD before filling the amount into the * area of box 13 (with a light blue border). There are 3 types of exchange rate that the CRA accepts; one commonly used is http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/xchng_rt-eng.html (need to select 2011 from the list).

  1. How do I transfer a tuition fee to my spouse's income tax?

To transfer tuition from your spouse, you need to fill out the line 360 on Schedule 2 and/or line 5909 on Provincial Schedule 2.

Your spouse need to file her return and put the amounts transferred in his/her federal Schedule 11 and the Provincial Schedule 11.

  1. How do I complete the tuition transfer if I want to transfer an amount to a parent?

To transfer your tuition to your parents, you need to enter the designated amount at the input box above line 327 on federal Schedule 11 and the counterpart in ON Schedule 11. Please note that you cannot exceed the federal and provincial max allowable transfer amounts. They may be different depends on provinces.

In addition to your return, in your parent’s return, he/she need to input the dependant detail at Schedule 5 then enter the federal and provincial tuition transferred amount in the two boxes.

  1. How do I fill out the lower part of my T2202/T2202A slip?

We didn't draw the lower part of the T2202A slip, and the information there is not necessary for the calculation purpose, it does’t need to be submitted with your NETFILE .tax file, and you need to attach the slip with your T1 form while you mail your paper return anyway.

To transfer your education amount to others, you can fill in the white section on Schedule 11 and/or Provincial Schedule 11.

  1. Is my scholarship tax exempt? How do I claim it?

Elementary and secondary school scholarships and bursaries are no longer taxable. Scholarships are entered under "Other income" at line 130 of your T1. Your university should provide your with a T4A that you can enter by clicking on "T4A - Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income" from the Workspace page, then clicking "Add" on the Navigation Tool Bar. Once you have filled in your T4A, the amount at line 130 will be automatically updated by the software. If the To-Do List prompts you that some of your "Other Income" is tax exempt, you may need to manually enter the amount of your scholarship into your T1 worksheet.

  1. How do I know when I'm done creating my Return?

Once you have entered all of your slips, the To-Do List will tell you if there are any actions you have to complete. Once you have emptied your To-Do List, you are ready to file your Return. But wait, always review your return to make sure you have enter all necessary information. Here is a checklist:

  • Information of your spouse or common-law partner if applicable.
  • Information of your dependants, and related child care expenses etc., if applicable?
  • All T slips you received from your employer, government departments, your financial institutes, etc.
  • Any self-employment income/losses, commission, tips etc to report?
  • Provincial 428/479.
  • Anything you reported last year that may still valid for this year?

Once you have completed your Return, some Tips may still appear in the To-Do list; however, these are friendly reminders, and can be ignored.

  1. How do I NETFILE?

Before you can use NETFILE you have to have a CRA provided four-digit access code. If you didn’t get the access code in the mail, then you can visit http://www.netfile.gc.ca/bt-eng.html to find out how you can obtain it. Then you need to generate the ".TAX" file. (Please check How do I generate my ".TAX" file below for more information) After the ".TAX" file is generated, you have to open your browser and go to http://www.netfile.gc.ca/rdy-eng.html. Please follow the online instructions to submit your .TAX file.

  1. How do I generate my ".TAX" file.

Once you have completed your return and are ready to file, push the “NETFILE” button at the bottom while you are viewing your profile, it will start the eTaxCanada NETFILE wizard. The wizard will guide you through the process of generating the ".TAX" file. Once the process is completed, a file with a .TAX extension will be created, and you can choose where to save it.

Please read the NETFILE wizard pages carefully to confirm that you are eligible to use NETFILE. For more information on the CRA’s restrictions on the use of NETFILE please visit http://www.netfile.gc.ca/rstrctns-eng.html. After you save the ".TAX" file, the NETFILE Wizard page will show you information on how to submit the ".TAX" file to the CRA.

Please pay attention to where you store your “.TAX” file because you will need to locate the file to upload it when you NETFILE.

  1. How do I get my access code for NETFILE?

You need to get your access code in order to file your tax return to NETFILE. You can get your access code from here: http://www.netfile.gc.ca/ccsscd-eng.html.

  1. How do I print a copy of my tax return?

To print your tax return in eTaxCanada 2011, please click on the Save PDF button at the bottom of the software when you are viewing your profile.

You can use Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the PDF file and/or print it out. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in your computer, you can get it from www.adobe.com for free.
